5 Red Flags That a Supplier Will Scam You (And How To Check).

China has thousands of honest, hardworking factories. But the bad actors are clever. They know foreign buyers can’t easily verify claims.

Every year, businesses lose $10,000–$100,000+ to fake Yiwu suppliers. The scam usually goes like this: pay a deposit → get low-quality goods or nothing at all → supplier disappears.
The good news? Most scams use the same patterns. Here are 5 red flags to spot them – and free ways to check each one.
Red Flag #1 – No Physical Showroom or Factory Visit Possible
What they say: “We are a factory, but we don’t allow visits,” or “Our showroom is under renovation.”
Why it’s a scam: Real Yiwu suppliers pay thousands for their market booth or factory. They are proud to show it. Scammers operate from a shared office or even a residential apartment.
How to check (free):
Ask for a live video tour via WeChat or WhatsApp. Say: “Please show me your booth number and walk around your showroom for 30 seconds.”
A real supplier will do it immediately. A scammer will give excuses.
Extra step: Look up their claimed booth number on the official Yiwu market website. If it doesn’t exist or belongs to another company – red flag.
Red Flag #2 – Prices 30% Lower Than Everyone Else
What they say: “Special promotion for you. Our price is $1.00; others charge $1.50.”
Why it’s a scam: Nobody sells at a loss. If the price is significantly lower, one of two things will happen:
They ship a cheaper, lower-quality version of your product (e.g., thinner plastic, fewer features)
They take your deposit and disappear
How to check (free):
Get quotes from at least 3 different Yiwu suppliers for the exact same specification. If one is 30% lower, ask for a sample. Almost always, the sample will be garbage, or never arrive.
Rule of thumb: A reasonable price difference between suppliers is 5–15%, depending on MOQ. Anything beyond that is suspicious.
Red Flag #3 – Rushing You to Pay the Full Amount
What they say: “If you pay 100% deposit today, I will give an extra 5% discount. Very busy season coming.”
Why it’s a scam: Standard practice in Yiwu is 30% deposit, 70% balance after inspection and before shipping. Suppliers who demand 100% upfront know they can deliver nothing, and you have no leverage.
How to check (free):
Simply say: “I will pay 30% deposit via Trade Assurance or escrow. Balance after my inspection report.”
A genuine supplier will agree (or ask for 40–50% at most). A scammer will push back hard or ghost you.
Safe payment methods:
· Alibaba Trade Assurance (covers up to $100k)
· Escrow services like Payoneer or XTransfer
· Letter of Credit (for large orders)
Never use Western Union, MoneyGram, or direct crypto for deposits.
Red Flag #4 – Vague or No Business License
What they say: “We don’t need a license. We are honest. You trust me.”
Why it’s a scam: Every legitimate import/export company in China must register with the government. They have a “Unified Social Credit Code” (similar to a tax ID). No license = no legal entity = no recourse if they take your money.
How to check (free):
Ask for a photo of their business license (营业执照 – yíngyè zhízhào). Then search the license number on China’s National Enterprise Credit Information System (www.gsxt.gov.cn). Use Google Translate to navigate.
If you don’t want to wrestle with the Chinese system, email the license to us at ZitaYiwuHub – we’ll verify it for free within 24 hours.
Red Flag #5 – No Past Export Records
What they say: “This is our first export. But we are very professional.”
Why it’s a risk: Even honest domestic factories have never exported. They don’t know how to pack for sea freight, fill out commercial invoices, or handle customs clearance. The result: your goods get stuck at the port or arrive damaged.
How to check (free):
Ask for a copy of a previous commercial invoice (with confidential info blacked out) or a bill of lading. A supplier with export experience will have dozens.
You can also search their company name on import records databases like ImportGenius (free trial).
